Becoming a Good Swimmer

Since I was in primary school, I have always wanted to learn how to swim. Last summer, my mom finally helped me to enroll in the swimming lessons. I was very thrilled and excited. After I arrived at the swimming pool, I changed my swimming shorts immediately. However, I realized that the water was too deep, I started to feel frightened. I was not brave enough to jump into the water so I stayed by the side of the pool. I felt completely hopeless. I looked at the other kids playing in the pool happily, I was super jealous! I was also embarrassed that everyone else except me was having fun playing in the water! The coach realized that I was scared of the water, so he gave me some encouragements. He told me, “It’s okay! Don’t be scared! We can find different methods to overcome your problem!” Then, he took a float for me.

I put on the float at once and I jumped in the water. I didn’t sink or drown. The coach taught me how to move my arms and legs. I practiced what the coach had taught me every day. I practiced very hard. Although it was very tough and exhausting, I didn’t give up. I practiced with my heart and soul.

After practicing for six months, I improved a lot! I could swim faster so my coach recommended me to join a swimming competition. I was so confident that I could win. At last, I came third! I was very proud of myself. My hard work had finally paid off. I believed that next time I would improve more and I would be the first.

From this experience, I learnt that being persistent is very important. We shouldn’t give up easily. We should keep on trying. If we fail, we can use a different method and try again. Not only I got a bronze medal, but I also conquered my fear of water. I was really proud of myself.
