Becoming a Good Swimmer

Since I was in primary school, I have always wanted to learn how to swim. Last summer, I asked my mom to let me take swimming lessons and she agreed.  When it was time for my first swimming lesson, I watched other children jump into the pool, but I just stayed by the side of the pool because I was suddenly afraid of going into the water. The coach saw me and came over to me. He said, “You need to find different ways to help yourself.  You can’t be afraid of water if you want to learn how to swim,” he encouraged me.

My coach and I thought of different ways to overcome my fear of drowning.  First, he gave me a float and told me to try to float on the water. Then, the coach taught me how to move my arms and legs. During my practice, I was very tired because I tried very hard to swim faster. I sometimes wanted to give up, but I reminded myself to be persistent. My family, friends and coach supported me and gave me the strength to go on.

After six months of practising, my swimming skills improved a lot and I could swim faster before.  My coach asked me to join a swimming competition and I agreed.  When it was time for the competition, I tried my best and was very confident, and I believed I could succeed.  When I found out that I came third, I was very happy and proud of myself.  I was very thankful to my coach, family and friends because they supported me when I was going through hard times.

From this experience, I leant that if we want to achieve our goals, we have to be strong and persistent and we should never give up easily.
